The Prosecutor General's Office intends to confiscate property worth more than 2 billion drams, including in the Czech Republic, as well as cash in the amount of 2.4 billion drams, from the former mayor of Yerevan, former Minister of State Revenues of Armenia Yervand Zakharyan and members of his family.
In particular, as reported to the Armenian Public Television by the supervisory authority, 14 units of real estate, 2 vehicles (worth 18 million drams), the right to participate in 5 legal entities, and funds from two outstanding deposits are required to be confiscated from the former mayor and persons affiliated with him. The illegal part of the cost of real estate and one company acquired in the Czech Republic (more than 16 million drams), and the right to claim loans in the amount of more than 1.190 billion drams are also subject to confiscation.
The representative of the former mayor of Yerevan, lawyer Andranik Manukyan, considered the claim unfounded and subject to rejection. According to him, they have relevant evidence, the search for evidence continues. "My client does not own illegal property or funds," he insisted.
Zakharyan was the Minister of Transport of Armenia in 1998-2000, Deputy Minister of State Revenue in 2000-2001, and was then reappointed Minister of Transport and Communications of Armenia. In 2001- 2003, he held the post of Minister of State Revenue of Armenia, in 2003-2009 he was the mayor of Yerevan, in 2009 he was an adviser to the President of Armenia, in 2009-2014 he was the Chairman of the Real Estate Cadastre Committee under the Government of Armenia, and in 2014-2016 he was the Minister of Energy and Natural Resources of Armenia. He is a member of the Republican Party of Armenia.
The former mayor is accused of abuse of office, illegal sale of a plot of land on which the Youth Palace building was located (popularly called "Kukuruznik" or "Krtsats Kukuruz") in Yerevan at a price many times lower than the cadastral value.
