ArmInfo. The environment in which Armenian journalists work today has never existed before. This was stated to journalists on March 27 by Sarkis Khandanyan, Chairman of the RA National Assembly Committee on Foreign Relations, MP from the ruling Civil Contract faction.
According to him, the incident that occurred the day before in parliament is just an incident, and it cannot be used to judge the general situation with the country's journalistic community, especially in the context of freedom of speech and human rights. "In any case, today in Armenia journalists are not persecuted, as was the case in the past, there are no convicted media representatives in the country, they are free to do their job of providing services to the citizens of the republic," the MP noted. He pointed out that in the past, there was an absolute monopoly in the media sphere, which, however, has not undergone significant changes after the Velvet Revolution of 2018. "Today, we are simply seeing a monopoly in the opposition field in the information field," Khandanyan noted.
Recall that on March 26, journalists held a peaceful protest in the Armenian parliament against the behavior of Andranik Kocharyan, a deputy from the Civil Contract faction, who had previously insulted journalist Hripsime Jebejyan. Security Service officers forcibly removed the journalists from the gallery of the parliament and took away the posters they were holding in their hands.
