ArmInfo. The Italy-Armenia Interparliamentary Friendship Group has called on Yerevan and Baku to sign the peace treaty as soon as possible. The group's statement was published by the Armenian embassy in Italy.
The statement reads, in part: "Last week, Armenia and Azerbaijan confirmed that there is an agreed text for a peace agreement that could bring an end to the nearly 40-year conflict in the South Caucasus. The announcement was made during a visit to Italy by Armenian parliamentarians from a friendly delegation of our two countries. The European Union, France, Germany, Italy, the United States, China, Russia, NATO and many other countries have welcomed the news, expressing hope that the agreement will be signed without delay.
Particularly, Italy is ready to concretely support the peace process by actively participating in mediation efforts and establishing a framework that will guarantee the safety of citizens, respect for the rights of prisoners, including fair trials and the full protection of human dignity. As members of the Italy-Armenia Inter-Parliamentary Friendship Group, we welcome this announcement and join the call for the immediate signing of an agreement that will definitively end the brutal conflict that has led to thousands of casualties and the displacement of people."
