ArmInfo. Armenia will have a defense attache at the Permanent Mission of the Republic of Armenia to the UN. The draft resolution, initiated by the Ministry of Defense, was approved by the Cabinet of Ministers on March 20.
As stated in the explanatory note to the document, the UN is called upon to promote the strengthening of international peace and security, therefore Armenia consistently advocates the full and comprehensive implementation of treaties and regimes related to conventional arms control, global disarmament and non- proliferation, confidence-building measures and security. Participation in UN peacekeeping operations is an important contribution to the maintenance of international peace and security, in the context of which Armenian peacekeepers have been deployed at various times as part of the UN Interim Force in Lebanon and the Multinational Stabilization Mission in Mali.
Working jointly with the Permanent Mission of the Republic of Armenia to the UN and effectively interacting with numerous structures and divisions of the organization, as well as participating in open discussions, the Military Attache has the opportunity to present Armenia's military, military-political priorities and approaches in the context of maintaining international peace and security>, - noted the RA Defense Ministry.
The RA MoD, within the scope of its authority, organizes cooperation of the Republic of Armenia with foreign states and international organizations in the military and military-political spheres.
The military attache to international organizations, acting within the framework of the authority established by law, coordinates cooperation with international organizations in the military and defense spheres, represents the RA MoD and the armed forces, and carries out representative work, which includes establishing and deepening official ties with various UN departments and structures, developing relations in the military sphere, monitoring the implementation of cooperation programs, and assisting in organizing visits of delegations of the Ministry and the armed forces. Upon the instruction of the Ministry of Defense and through the mediation of the leadership of the MFA, the military attache may carry out supervisory functions in the manner prescribed by international law.
