Secretary General of the Ombudsman's Office of Armenia Nina Pirumyan took part in the General Assembly held in Geneva as part of the annual session of the Global Alliance of National Human Rights Institutions (GAHRI), as well as in the international conference dedicated to women's rights and the promotion of gender equality.
As reported by the press service of the Ombudsman's Office of Armenia, during the General Assembly, human rights institutions that are part of the global alliance discussed issues of exchanging experience in the field of protecting the rights of people with disabilities, and also considered the problems and role of national human rights institutions in the accreditation process.
During the discussions, Nina Pirumyan presented to her colleagues the experience of the institution of the Human Rights Defender of Armenia, focusing on the report submitted to the UN Committee on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities. The Secretary General of the Ombudsman's Office of Armenia discussed systemic problems in this area and outlined the steps planned for their solution. The importance of effective participation of people with disabilities in the development of strategic documents and policies concerning their rights was highlighted as a key aspect for ensuring their voice in decision-making. In this regard, Pirumyan highlighted the positive experience of the active participation of the Public Council on the Protection of the Rights of People with Disabilities.
The Secretary General also emphasized the importance of the accreditation process, noting its role as a tool for national human rights institutions to objectively assess their work. According to Pirumyan, accreditation helps strengthen legislative guarantees for the functioning of national institutions at the domestic level, and also provides appropriate human, technical and financial resources.
Further, within the framework of the conference dedicated to women's rights and the promotion of gender equality, Pirumyan discussed the existing problems in this area in the country. She focused on the need to form the correct public perception and education in the field of human rights for the full realization of the role and potential of women in public and political life. In this vein, she noted that women, especially those who raise sensitive human rights issues and play an active public role, often become targets of hatred, including online aggression.
In addition, Pirumyan touched upon the process of introducing the Gender Equality Badge of Honor into the Human Rights Defender's Office in cooperation with the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP). According to her, this methodology is aimed at ingraining gender-sensitive approaches into the work of the institution.
According to the source, at the end of the international conference, national human rights institutions that are part of the global alliance presented the text of a joint statement dedicated to the rights of women and girls and the promotion of gender equality.
