ArmInfo. The unexpected "landing" in Baku of Trump's adviser on the Middle East and Ukraine Steve Witkoff and US National Security Advisor Mike Waltz on Twitter (X) is an attempt to keep Azerbaijan (Turkey) from adventurism and prevent tensions in the South Caucasus. Americanist Suren Sargsyan holds a similar opinion.
The expert believes that US President Donald Trump is now focused on ending the war in Ukraine and on the possible start of negotiations with Iran or other pressure on Iran.
Sargsyan is confident that Trump does not need any other background processes today that could interfere with these main priorities.
"The United States understands very well that possible aggression by Azerbaijan in the region could mix up some of the cards. Therefore, it is necessary to keep Azerbaijan (Turkey) from adventurism and prevent tension in the South Caucasus. Moreover, Turkey needs to sit down at the table of global negotiations with its cards in hand. Incidentally, Turkey itself is fueling Russian-Azerbaijani tensions, and with the same goal," the political scientist is sure.
Touching upon the Trump team's messages regarding Armenia, Sargsyan noted that the work of the Armenian community, lobbyists and human rights organizations on this issue is also noticeable.
"Let's not forget that there are many people in Trump's inner circle who not only know Armenia's place on the map, but also have good connections with the public and a good understanding of Armenia's problems. Trump does not need to create new tensions in relations with Russia now. On the contrary, he needs Russia's support to solve both foreign and domestic policy problems. That is why at the moment he is not interested in opening new "fronts" against Russia," Sargsyan concluded.
Mike Walz previously stated that the conflict in the South Caucasus must end. At the same time, he added that at a meeting with Azerbaijani officials, he emphasized the need to sign an Armenian-Azerbaijani peace agreement, and also noted the importance of releasing prisoners.
