ArmInfo.Specialists from the Italian Institute "L'Opificio delle Pietre Dure" are set to come to Armenia this year to work on the restoration of the 3rd century bathhouse near the pagan temple of Garni.
As ArmInfo was informed by the press service of the Ministry of Education, Science, Culture and Sports (MESCS) of Armenia, the Italian specialists are expected to arrive in April-May 2025 to begin the restoration of the mosaics and replace the coating. The project was initially developed by Italian architect and restorer Lucio Speca in 2019, outlining plans for strengthening and restoring the bathhouse's mosaic using modern architectural solutions.
It is noted that the Ministry began negotiations with the Italian side after the above events, and in 2024 an agreement was reached for the restoration of the mosaic by the L'Opificio delle Pietre Dure Institute with the support of the Italian Embassy in Armenia. In preparation for the project, the Institute's specialists also conducted on-site measurement work in 2024. According to the source, the project is being implemented in cooperation with leading Italian restorers and is funded by state allocations.
Note that earlier, a scandal erupted in the Armenian social media community over the poor conditions of this landmark in Garni. Experts accused the Ministry of inadequate care of this architectural structure, which is in urgent need of restoration.
