ArmInfo. The National Public Association "HayaQue" once again appeals to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Armenia with the demand to take immediate measures to obtain from the de facto authorities of Syria guarantees of the security of the Armenian population and organize its repatriation. This is stated in the statement of the association.
"Back at the end of last year, the national public association "HayaQue" expressed deep concern about the situation that developed after the change of power in the Syrian Arab Republic, in particular, the fate of the Armenian community in Syria. We demanded that the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Armenia immediately begin a dialogue with the de facto authorities of Syria in order to obtain security guarantees for the local Armenian community, as well as organize immediate actions aimed at the repatriation of the Armenian community of Syria. Unfortunately, the worst events that we predicted are becoming a reality these days. The repressions launched by the new authorities in the regions of Syria led to protests by the local Alawite and Christian population, followed by mass killings and torture of civilians by armed groups loyal to the current pro-Turkish government. Among others, Armenian citizens of Syria were killed, and the wave of violence can quickly spread to other regions populated by Armenians," the statement reads.
In these circumstances, the statement emphasizes, the association once again appeals to the RA MFA with the demand to take immediate measures to obtain guarantees for the security of the Armenian population from the de facto authorities of Syria and organize its repatriation. "Also, taking into account the tragic situation in Syria, we demand that the Republic of Armenia, together with other foreign partners, take urgent steps to convene a meeting of the UN Security Council to discuss the situation in Syria and take effective measures to stop the violence," the statement says.
