National hero Vazgen Sargsyan would have turned 66 today 

ArmInfo. Today, March 5, the National Hero of Armenia and Artsakh, Sparapet Vazgen Sargsyan would have turned 66 years old.

Before the start of the next session, the deputies of the National  Assembly of the Republic of Armenia honored the memory of the  National Hero with applause.

From early morning, many political and public figures of the country,  the military began a march to the memorial complex of military  burials "Erablur" to pay tribute to the memory of Sparapet.

According to the deputy of the National Assembly of the Republic of  Armenia from the opposition faction "I have the honor" Tigran  Abrahamyan, over the past 3 decades, the name of Vazgen Sargsyan has  invariably been associated with the army and army construction. "In  Vazgen Sargsyan's vision, the army, first of all, had a clearly  expressed ideological basis, where everyone - from private to  general, knew what he needed to do, realized the importance of his  mission and knew why he was part of the army. No matter what happened  to us over the years, no matter who tried to break and eradicate the  main institution of the country, it is necessary to preserve healthy  shoots for the revival of the army and its return to the legal  channel. Vazgen Sargsyan was one of the victims of the terrorist act committed  on October 27, 1999, in the session hall of the National Assembly of  the Republic of Armenia. On that day, a group of terrorists broke  into the parliament and shot dead the Prime Minister of Armenia  Vazgen Sargsyan, the Speaker of the National Assembly of the Republic  of Armenia Karen Demirchyan, the Vice Speakers Yuri Bakhshyan and  Ruben Miroyan, the Minister of Operational Issues Leonard Petrosyan  and the deputies Armenak Armenakyan, Mikael Kotanyan and Henrik  Abrahamyan. The terrorist group included former journalist Nairi  Hunanyan, who worked for some time on Armenian television, his  brother Karen Hunanyan, their uncle Vram Galstyan, as well as Derenik  Bejanyan and Ashot Knyazyan. Their trial began on February 15, 2001.  On December 2, 2003, the Center-Nork-Marash Court of First Instance  sentenced the brothers Nairi and Karen Hunanyan, Edik Grigoryan, Vram  Galstyan (who died in prison in 2004, according to the official  version, having committed suicide), Derenik Bejanyan and Ashot  Knyazyan to life imprisonment. Hamlet Stepanyan was sentenced to 14  years in prison (In May 2010, his body was found in his bed in the  Nubarashen Penitentiary). All seven were found guilty of treason and  terrorism. The RA Court of Cassation upheld the sentence.

The masterminds behind the outrageous crime are still unknown.
