ArmInfo. The democratic aspirations of the Armenian authorities have not yielded the desired results, as evidenced by the 2024 Democracy Index recently publishedr by the Economist Intelligence Unit (EIU).
The EIU, the research and analytical division of the Economist Group, offers forecasting and advisory services through country research and analysis, five-year economic forecasts, country risk reports and industry reports.
In the study, that analyzed 167 countries, the countries were categorized into four types of political regimes: full democracy, imperfect democracy, hybrid regime and authoritarian regime. These types were determined by an overall score ranging from 0 to 10 (10 = best). Countries scoring between 9.0-10.0, 8.0- 9.0 were considered full democracies. Countries scoring between 7.0-8.0 and 6.0-7.0 were classified as- imperfect democracies. Those between 5.0-6.0 and 4.0-5.0 were labeled as hybrid regimes, while countries scoring 3.0-4.0 and 2.0-3.0 0-2.0 were categorized as authoritarian regimes.
Thus, according to the report, Armenia is among countries with a hybrid regime, ranking 82nd between Fiji and Madagascar with 5.35 points. Despite a regression in democracy, compared to last year's 5.63 points, Armenia still demonstrates the best indicators among regional countries. Neighboring Georgia and Turkey also have hybrid regimes, scoring 4.70 points (94th place) and 4.26 points ( 103rd place), respectively. The rest of Armenia's neighbors are among the authoritarian regimes, with Azerbaijan at 2.80 points (126th place), and Iran at 1.96 points (154th place). Armenia's ally, Russia, has 2.03 points (150 place).
At the same time, it is noted that in the "Electoral process and pluralism" section, Armenia has 7.92 points, in the "Efficiency of public administration" section - 4.29 points, in the "Participation in political life" section - 6.11 points, in the "Political culture" section - 3.13 points and in "Civil liberties" - 5.29 points.
