ArmInfo. Azerbaijan, by trying the military-political leadership of Artsakh, is creating false grounds for accusing Armenia of non-existent crimes. Former Ombudsman of Armenia, head of the Tatoyan Foundation Arman Tatoyan holds a similar opinion. At the same time, the human rights activist is sure that the fight against these lawlessness must be carried out taking into account the above. "The only person responsible for the illegal detention of Armenians in Azerbaijan is the leader of the ruling Civil Contract party, who is the Prime Minister of Armenia. He is the main addressee.
Today, throughout the day, some members of the Civil Contract shamelessly and consciencelessly accused Armenian hostages and prisoners in an Azerbaijani prison of being captured, and soldiers of not fighting, thus trying to protect the leader of the Civil Contract and justify themselves.
It is fundamentally important that this issue does not turn into a question of releasing individuals or political opponents. This issue should be one of the priorities of the foreign policy of the Republic of Armenia and be considered in the context of Azerbaijan's hostility towards Armenia," the human rights activist wrote on his Facebook account.
Tatoyan is confident that with these artificial trials, testimonies obtained under torture, and fabricated stories, Azerbaijan is providing itself with grounds for further aggression and pressure on Armenia.
On January 17, under the chairmanship of Judge Zeynal Agayev, the Baku Military Court began considering the "indictment" against the former leaders of Nagorno-Karabakh. Among the accused are three former presidents of Nagorno-Karabakh: Arkady Ghukasyan, Bako Sahakyan and Arayik Harutyunyan. Also appearing before the court will be former Foreign Minister David Babayan, Speaker of the Parliament David Ishkhanyan, former Commander of the Defense Army General Levon Mnatsakanyan, General David Manukyan and former State Minister Ruben Vardanyan.
On January 16, Vardanyan made a statement in which he demanded that he and his lawyer be given the opportunity to fully prepare for the defense; that all violations and falsifications be eliminated; that the trial of him and all the other accused be made public. "I insist on a maximally open trial with the participation of international journalists and representatives of humanitarian organizations. I am convinced that only a real court, and not a trial, will help take a step forward on the difficult path of building new relationships between our peoples," he emphasized. In conclusion, he demanded that his case be combined with the cases of the other defendants. "More than 400 volumes of my case out of 422 are episodes of the general case. Separating my case into a separate proceeding is an artificial and unfounded decision," Vardanyan added.
After a number of Vardanyan's motions were rejected during the trial, he went on a hunger strike on February 15. On February 26, Ruben Vardanyan's international lawyer Jared Genser made a statement in which he reported a sharp deterioration in his client's health and called on the international community to respond to the trial in Baku.
Footage from the last court hearing shows bruises and hematomas on Vardanyan's face, indicating that force was used against the philanthropist.
