ArmInfo. It is necessary to maintain correct ideas about the system of values, about the Motherland, about the Armenian Apostolic Church and about the historical past in the Armenian people. This was stated by Catholicos of All Armenians Garegin II during the solemn liturgy dedicated to the Day of Remembrance of the Holy Priests of the Ghevondians.
According to the report of the Chancellery of the Mother See of Etchmiadzin, in his speech the Patriarch noted that the holiday is a special indicator of the perception of the exemplary image of the Armenian clergyman, the rethinking of his mission and selfless service to the people. His Holiness emphasized that the day of remembrance of the Holy Priests Ghevondyan is another occasion to recall how one can strengthen the Armenian state and contribute to the well-being and security of the Homeland. "Only in this way can we strengthen the spirit of solidarity in society, protect national interests and fundamental rights both within the country and abroad. In order to achieve these goals, we first of all need great dedication and courage, high consciousness and commitment to serving the nation and the homeland," said the Catholicos of All Armenians, calling on the clergy to serve and act like the Ghevondian priests, to be a shining example for people with their words and example, to be very attentive so that not only the achievements of the centuries are not wasted, but also the glory of the ancestors is multiplied with new achievements for the benefit of the people and the homeland.
Therefore, the Patriarch continued, in order to keep the Armenian people strong in their spiritual identity and national character, as well as to ensure the unity and bright future of the people, it is necessary to strengthen and protect the holy faith in God.
About 250 priests took part in the solemn liturgy.
During the Battle of Avarayr, the Ghevondian priests marched at the head of the Armenian army and with their fiery words inspired the soldiers, conveyed strength and spirit to the heroes who stood up to fight the Persian army for the independence of their homeland and the Church of Christ.
The eldest in age was the priest Ghevond. Along with his name, Armenian chroniclers mention the names of Catholicos Joseph, Bishops Sahak Rshtuni and Tatik Baseni, priests Mushegh, Arshen and Samvel, deacons Abraham and Kajajn.
After the battle, the Persian king Yazdegerd took revenge on the heroes: the brave priests were killed by his order. The Armenian Apostolic Church celebrates the memory of the Holy Priests of Ghevond on the Tuesday preceding the True Maslenitsa (Bun Barekendan), which corresponds to February 25.
