ArmInfo. Against the backdrop of improving Russian- American relations, Turkey's role in the South Caucasus region is significantly reduced. Turkologist Varuzhan Geghamyan holds a similar point of view.
In his Telegram channel, he wrote that in the ongoing negotiations between the US and Russia, to which the attention of the whole world is riveted, details are important. "One of such important details, in my opinion, is that Turkey has effectively lost its status as a neutral country in the Ukrainian conflict, and, consequently, its status as a mediator. Let me remind you that in 2022-2023, Ankara was the main mediator, from which Erdogan benefited significantly in solving his problems. Now the situation has changed. Turkey has ceded its role to Saudi Arabia, where the meeting of US-Russian envoys took place, and where the meeting of the US and Russian presidents - Donald Trump and Vladimir Putin - is expected to take place. Simply put, this is good news, since it deprives Turkey of wide room for maneuver in foreign policy issues, and also indicates a decrease in the latter's role for Russia and tensions in bilateral relations," Geghamyan noted.
All this, according to him, combined with a number of other facts, gives grounds for some optimism regarding Turkey's limited role in the South Caucasus. "Of course, this does not mean that our threats will disappear automatically. However, the possibilities to counter them are increasing, and national forces must take advantage of this," the political scientist wrote.
