ArmInfo. The pre-trial detention centers (PIFs) in Aparan and Tashir have been suspended since February 17, as reported by the press service of the Ministry of Internal Affairs (MIA) of Armenia.
The department noted that this decision is part of police reform strategy to optimize the work of pre-trial detention centers by 30% based on data from 2022-2023. The MIA has identified facilities with poor conditions and high workload during the analysis, considering the availability of alternative institutions in nearby areas.
"The main objective of the reform is to create detention facilities that are better-maintained and properly equipped to meet international standards. Currently, 11 out of 33 pretrial detention facilities have already had their activities suspended, while 22 continue to operate," the department reported. The Ministry of Internal Affairs is continuing to monitor the situation and develop solutions to improve the detention system as part of the reform.
