ArmInfo. All responsibility for the events that have taken place in Armenia and Artsakh since 2018 lies entirely with the current government of Armenia. This is the viewpoint expressed by Levon Kocharyan, a member of the parliamentary faction "Armenia" and the son of the second President of the Republic Robert Kocharyan.
His response came in light of the recent statements of the speaker of the Armenian parliament, Alen Simonyan, who stated that "if the people of Artsakh truly wanted a homeland, they should have fought for it." Kocharyan emphasized the importance of not only considering Simonyan's words, but also examining the actions of the entire ruling political team. He noted that these were the ones who led the Armenian people into war and then recognized Artsakh as part of Azerbaijan.
The MP also recalled that amidst discussions about the draft law "On Launching Armenia's EU Accession Process", European values are being actively discussed in the country. He questioned whether it would be conceivable for a speaker of parliament in any European country to spit in the face of a citizen. "Can you imagine a scenario where a speaker of parliament would grab someone's hands, spit in their face or make a similar statement and still hold his position," he asked. Kocharyan criticized Simonyan's generalization regarding the forcibly displaced population of Artsakh as unethical. He highlighted the importance of focusing on the possibility of the Artsakh people's return with the signing of a peace treaty and the establishment of security mechanisms in Armenia's foreign policy agenda. In this regard, Kocharyan recalled that high-level discussions held in the Swiss parliament revealed that neither Azerbaijan nor Armenia are willing to address this issue in the context of the Artsakh people's return. "Moreover, the peace treaty does not contain a word about this," added the son of the second President of Armenia.
