ArmInfo. The biggest risk for Armenia is to hold direct talks with Azerbaijan without mediators, as noted by Armen Rustamyan, a member of the National Assembly of the Republic of Armenia representing the opposition faction "Armenia".
During a conversation with journalists on February 12, he pointed out that holding talks between the winning and losing sides poses risks, primarily associated with the winning side imposing conditions. He recalled that Turkey and Azerbaijan are advocating for the opening of direct transport links with Azerbaijan. In turn, Yerevan stresses its support for opening all communications in the region, but Baku will still consider this route a corridor. "Do you really think that the Turks and Azerbaijanis fail to see the difference here? They just want to appease us in order to weaken our vigilance," the politician noted.
He added that Baku will try to ensure communication between Azerbaijan and Nakhichevan by getting its own way. Speaking about the principles of reciprocity in this matter, the oppositionist noted that the current rulers of the country had good opportunities at one time to resolve existing problems, including territories, but nothing was done in this direction. In response, as Rustamyan emphasized, Baku may declare that Azerbaijan wants to establish communication between Azerbaijan and Azerbaijan. "Now this entire process is kept secret, but from the information we have received, it appears that this requirement will become a mandatory condition for concluding a peace treaty. Most likely, the opening of this section of the road will become part of the verbal agreement between the parties. Both of these factors - direct negotiations and verbal agreements are the most important risks to Armenia's security," Rustamyan said.
"This document only mentions one corridor - Lachin," he said, emphasizing that Armenia has never agreed to provide Azerbaijan with an extraterritorial corridor.
