ArmInfo. Today, Alen Simonayn, Speaker of the National Assembly of Armenia, tried to mitigate the negative effect of his words by clarifying that his comments yesterday were aimed at specific individuals and not the entire people of Artsakh.
The day before, Alen Simonyan criticized the people of Artsakh for not fighting against the Azerbaijanis in the last war. <You left, you left because it was unsafe. Although you could have stayed and fought to the end, but you left,> the speaker of the parliament said during a briefing with journalists in the parliament, when a journalist from Artsakh asked when she could return to her homeland. The NA speaker pointed out that the people of Artsakh could have fight with the weapons that the Republic of Armenia left there. After the briefing, speaking from the high rostrum, Simonyan said: "I do not mean that no one from Karabakh fought for Karabakh. I mean that they called us and said: "We are leaving, we will not stay here any longer, open the border, we are leaving." We answered: "How can the soldiers stay if you are all leaving? How can you leave?" "No, no, open it, we are all leaving." Of course, we must leave, as soon as they start shooting, everyone must leave. In the same way, if they start shooting on the border in Syunik, you will all gather and leave. This means that everyone must stay and defend their homeland."
Artsakh President Samvel Shahramanyan demanded that Simonyan publicly apologize to the internally displaced persons from Artsakh and refrain from making assessments that cast doubt on the struggle of the people of Artsakh and the defense of their homeland.
"Many have fought, many have sacrificed their lives. It's not about them. Many understand who we are talking about," he said at a briefing today. According to him, he was talking about specific people who "were returning to their homes on Northern Avenue, who were returning to their mansions in Armenia." "About those who had built businesses outside of Karabakh, because they did not see their future connected to it," Simonyan noted. Instead of defending their homeland with weapons provided by Armenia, they acted in a manner that ultimately led to the de-Armenization of Artsakh. As for Shahramanyan himself, as Simonyan pointed out, he should first explain how he managed to leave Artsakh with his security and end up in Armenia, while the rest of his colleagues did not (former presidents of Artsakh held by Baku - ed.). Additionally, the speaker added that if the president of Artsakh has any questions for him, he should write to the relevant department of parliament, and he <will discuss and possible provide answer>.
Earlier, the President of Artsakh was asked why the former presidents were arrested but the fifth (Shahramanyan himself) was not touched. He said that Baku had shown a selective approach, arresting them based on political considerations. <I arrived by helicopter together with the Defense Minister and two security officers. We flew to the airport in Sisian,> Shahramanyan said.
