ArmInfo. The goal was to place the Russian Armed Forces along this corridor to have control over it. This was stated by the speaker of the Armenian parliament, Alen Simonyan, on February 11 during a conversation with journalists, while touching on the <etiology> of the concept of a <corridor> in the south of Armenia that would link Nakhichevan with Azerbaijan.
According to Simonyan, the <corridor logic> was and remains unacceptable for Armenia. Meanwhile, Azerbaijan does not reject it, since this name has already entered their discourse. <Whatever the road may be, whether it is the best option in our opinion or the worst in their (Azerbaijan) opinion, they will refer to it as a <corridor>. Even if there are Armenian customs officers present, and even if there are zero benefits for them, in political terms they will still call the road a corridor. Let's fix this,> he said.
When asked if Baku really demands a <corridor>, the speaker of the RA National Assembly responded that Azerbaijan's interpretation of this concept is constantly changing. <Discussions about the corridor initially revolved around the idea of deploying Russian Armed Forces to control it,> he clarified.
Article 9 of the Trilateral Statement November 9, 2020 mandates unblocking all economic and transport links in the region and requires Armenia to ensure safe transport between the western regions of Azerbaijan and the Nakhchivan Autonomous Republic to allow unhindered movement of people vehicles and cargo in both directions. The Border Service of Russia's FSB is tasked with overseeing this transport communications. By agreement of the Parties, the construction of new transport links connecting the Nakhchivan Autonomous Republic with the western regions of Azerbaijan will be guaranteed. According to Alen Simonyan, video cameras may also be used to oversee the road. <This document only refers to one corridor - Lachin,> he said, emphasizing that Armenia has never agreed to provide Azerbaijan with an extraterritorial corridor.
It should be noted that Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan has previously stated on numerous occasions: <Article 9 of the trilateral statement does not mention anything about the Russian Federation having the ability to control anything on our territory. Not to mention the fact that Russia and Azerbaijan have disregarded and threw out the remaining points (statements). How can one point be effective when the others are not. Referring to point 9 of the statement is no longer relevant, as Azerbaijan and Russia have violated their obligations under other points.>
