ArmInfo. Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan's visit to Washington had but one single goal: to understand if the new US President Donald Trump's administration will continue to offer the same political support he had received from the Biden administration, according to Americanist Suren Sargsyan.
The expert noted that he could get an answer to this question from the people making political decisions in Washington. "These people are the President, the Secretary of State, the Presidential Security Adviser, the Secretary of Defense, key officials of the State Department, the leadership of the intelligence community and others," the political scientist noted on his Facebook page. Additionally, he mentioned that meetings with the Speaker of the House of Representatives and the Senate Majority Leader could also be important, as they do not make decisions, but can influence them. At the same time, Sargsyan pointed out that the Armenian Prime Minister did not meet with any of the above-mentioned individuals during his visit to Washington. "Of course, Vice President Vance is a figure with a good image and a political future, but, unfortunately, he is not a key political decision-maker, I doubt he is well-informed about the administration's planned policy towards Armenia. It's like a situation where a head of state has political issues with Armenia and meets with the President of Armenia to resolve then," the expert noted.
Sargsyan believes that Pashinyan's main questions weren't answered during this visit. He returned from Washington unsure of what to expect from the new administration, particularly in relation to the Strategic Partnership Charter. "One thing is certain. This visit is not befitting of a strategic partner. Moreover, the timing, meetings and messages associated with the visit were inappropriate. Politically, Armenia didn't gain anything from the visit. It was a political blow to Pashinyan, the consequences of which are yet to be seen. No one familiar with Washington would consider this visit beneficial and anyone knowledgeable about Yerevan will understand that those who exaggerate the significance of the visit are simply promoting the government through PR efforts," the political scientist concluded.
Recall that the Prime Minister of Armenia and his wife were in Washington from February 3 to 7. The purpose of the visit was to participate in several events, including the International Summit on Religious Freedom.
