ArmInfo. A conference titled "The people of Armenia and their right to return to their land" was held in the French Senate. According to the report of the French Senate, the event was initiated by the association "Concert for Peace in Armenia".
"This topic has garnered the attention of members of the upper house of parliament for several years. Last year, the Senate adopted a resolution condemning the military operation carried out by Azerbaijan in Nagorno-Karabakh," the report of the French Senate reads. It is noted that Senator Marie-Do Aeschlimann from the Republican Party (LR), a member of the France- Armenia Friendship Committee Group, invited representatives of the association to the Senate for a discussion. According to the senator, the purpose of the event is to bring the issue of Nagorno-Karabakh to the forefront of public debate. During the conference, which was attended by former International Criminal Court Prosecutor Luis Moreno Ocampo, the rights of Armenians to safely return to Nagorno-Karabakh and the recognition of the NKR were discussed. The Senate's potential support for this movement and assistance to Armenians in their struggle for justice were also considered.
It is also mentioned that the French Senate adopted a resolution last year condemning Azerbaijan's military aggression in Nagorno-Karabakh in September 2023. The resolution also proposed developing a sanctions regime at the EU level against Azerbaijani officials responsible for the aggression and preventing any further attempts to violate the territorial integrity of Armenia. "The French Senate has been warning for several years about the situation of Armenians in Nagorno-Karabakh. In the fall of 2022, another document was adopted calling for sanctions against Azerbaijan and urging the immediate withdrawal of its troops from Armenian territory, as well as compliance with the ceasefire agreement signed on November 9, 2020," the statement said.
