ArmInfo. Speaking about "sovereignty", Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan actually means his own power, for the preservation of which victims and losses have not played a significant role for a long time. Political scientist, co-founder of the Alternative Projects group Vahe Hovhannisyan wrote about this on his Facebook page.
In this vein, the expert drew parallels between the current situation in Armenia and Ukraine. He noted that both leaders, Pashinyan and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, made statements reflecting their understanding of sovereignty. Hovhannisyan recalled Zelensky's words: "We preserved our state, our independence, sovereignty, the capital and many other cities and villages... Unfortunately, we suffered many casualties."
The Armenian political scientist emphasized that the President of Ukraine had the opportunity and duty to prevent the war or stop it as soon as possible in order to save the country from destruction and hundreds of thousands of lives. However, in his opinion, this was not done because Zelensky relied on external assistance instead of acting independently. "He is still coming up with a theory that he saved many cities and villages and, of course, sovereignty," Hovhannisyan noted.
Further, by analogy, he recalled the statements of the Armenian Prime Minister, in particular: "Having survived the defeat in the 44-day war, we were given the opportunity to have a sovereign state."
The political scientist drew attention to the similarity between the statements of Zelensky and Pashinyan. "In the case of Ukraine, it became clear who provoked the war and who forbade it to be stopped earlier... In the case of Armenia, this important issue remains to be clarified," the expert continued.
At the same time, Hovhannisyan expressed his conviction that in the future, with new losses of territory and human lives, we should expect a continuation of such statements from Nikol Pashinyan. He suggested that in order to justify his policy, the Armenian Prime Minister will again claim that Armenia is just beginning to build its sovereignty. "This is not excluded, since by saying "sovereignty", he means his own power, for the preservation of which the number of victims and losses has long been irrelevant," Hovhannisyan explained.
He then touched on the possibility of Zelensky and Pashinyan mixing up, and expressed his conviction that the Ukrainian population is ready to send "Zelensky to the dustbin of history along with what he has done." At the same time, Hovhannisyan stressed that it does not matter whether there will be regular or snap elections in Armenia, since Pashinyan has no chance of staying in power. However, according to him, this means only one thing: the Armenian prime minister can take some new steps before the elections, creating a new reality where the elections will not decide anything.
"This scenario must be taken very seriously. Our political and social seriousness requires that we recognize this and counteract it. We need to make the struggle and resistance much more serious and qualitatively different," the political scientist concluded.
Earlier, Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan said in his speech at the Atlantic Council in Washington that he had found a "formula for increasing the level of independence." He said, in particular: "When we thought about what the formula for increasing the level of independence was, we came to the conclusion that it meant replacing dependence on the few with dependence on the many. Now we are acting within the framework of this formula."
