Armenia expects that the International Committee of the Red Cross will continue to take all necessary measures in accordance with the norms of international humanitarian law to ensure the safety of Armenian prisoners of war and other detainees. This was stated by Deputy Chairman of the RA National Assembly Committee on Human Rights and Public Affairs Rustam Bakoyan during a meeting with the ICRC delegation headed by Daphne Marais.
As reported by the press service of the RA National Assembly, during the meeting it was noted that the ICRC staff regularly visits Armenian prisoners of war held in Baku. "Your organization, which is a neutral and independent mediator, needs to establish an exchange of information with the Azerbaijani authorities on this issue while maintaining confidentiality," Rustam Bakoyan expressed his opinion.
During the meeting, issues related to the ICRC's periodic visits to Armenian prisoners of war and other detainees held in Azerbaijan, criminal proceedings brought against them, as well as other humanitarian issues were discussed.
On January 17, under the chairmanship of Judge Zeynal Agayev, the Baku Military Court began considering the "indictment" against the former leaders of Nagorno-Karabakh. Among the accused are three former presidents of Nagorno-Karabakh: Arkady Ghukasyan, Bako Sahakyan and Arayik Harutyunyan. Also appearing before the court will be former Foreign Minister David Babayan, Parliament Speaker David Ishkhanyan, former Defense Army Commander General Levon Mnatsakanyan, General David Manukyan and former State Minister Ruben Vardanyan.
