ArmInfo. For Armenia, the decision to join the European Union or move closer to Europe could be a historic event. This was stated by Daiga Mierina, the Speaker of the Latvian Saeima, on January 23 during a panel discussion "Together for Peace and Democracy".
According to her, Latvia also faced the issue of joining the EU and NATO at one time, a decision that was supported by the people of the country. Today, as the Speaker of the Latvian Parliament emphasized, both decisions have been implemented. Daiga Mierina emphasized that ultimately, decisions should be made by the Armenian authorities. She added that democracy cannot exist without freedom of speech, which is under threat in many places. "If individuals are afraid to express their position openly, we risk losing our most important value, as without it, freedom will be lost," said the speaker of the Latvian Saeima, highlighting the prevalence of disinformation in both Europe and Armenia. She pointed out that progress towards democracy cannot halt once a certain level is reached.
