ArmInfo. The situation on the border between Armenia and Iran has always been peaceful. There have never been any issues there. Armenian MFA Ararat Mirzoyan stated this after talks with his Russian counterpart Sergey Lavrov in Moscow on January 21, in response to a question about whether it could be expected that the Armenian-Iranian border would become even more stable following the signing of the agreement on strategic partnership between the Russian Federation and Iran. Mirzoyan was surprised by the way the question was phrased, as there have never been any incidents on that section of the border. "To be honest, I am surprised by this formulation of the question, as the situation on the border between Armenia and Iran has always been peaceful and stable. There have never been any issues there, so I cannot understand how it will become more peaceful. It will continue to remain peaceful," he noted.
Touching upon Armenia's membership in the CSTO, Mirzoyan highlighted the strong bilateral agreements that Armenia has with Russia ahead of schedule. "We are allies and we have very good neighborly, partnership relations with Iran. Now Russia is also developing a successful partnership with Iran. I believe that all countries will benefit from this partnership," Mirzoyan added. Regarding the withdrawal of Russian border guards from the checkpoint on the border with Iran starting from December 30, 2024, Mirzoyan mentioned that this service was temporary, and Armenia is now capable of independently guarding this section of the border. "I don't think there is a significant source for a political scandal here either," the head of the Armenian Foreign Ministry noted.
