ArmInfo. Russia does have a biased stance on the developments in the South Caucasus. Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov made this statement following talks with Armenian Foreign Minister Ararat Mirzoyan in Moscow on January 21.
"I don't understand the basis on which you draw the conclusion that our position aligns with Azerbaijan's regarding the problems in our relationship with Armenia. It turns out that we support one side on the issue of the South Caucasus and the normalization of Armenian-Azerbaijani relations, This is not the case. We are dealing with issues that, we believe, are extremely urgent: the normalization of relations between Yerevan and Baku, based on our deep interest in seeing our fraternal peoples living in peace and good neighborliness," the Russian Foreign Minister said. According to him, Russia has strategic partnership and alliance relations with both the Armenian and Azerbaijani sides.
"And we are vitally interested in this, unlike those countries that are located far from the South Caucasus and are precisely aimed at maintaining tension here," Lavrov said. He added that these countries expect that amidst this escalation, they will be able to more effectively advance their geostrategic interests. Additionally, he emphasized that Russia is guided by the agreements reached by the leaders of Armenia, Azerbaijan and Russia from 2020 to 2022. "And we participate in this work exactly to the extent required by Yerevan and Baku, no more and no less," Lavrov concluded.
