ArmInfo.Armenian authorities must pursue a balanced policy to prevent the emergence of a tense situation in the country. This was stated by political scientist Suren Sargsyan in an interview with an ArmInfo correspondent regarding Armenia's signing of a Strategic Partnership Charter with the United States.
According to the expert, the signing of any documents concerning military cooperation between the two states is of great importance. However, he emphasized the importance of considering how the main provisions of this document will be implemented. At the same time, he expressed concerns that this step could provoke a strong reaction from Russia and Iran, potentially leading to certain actions on their part. "This is logical, since the United States, Russia and Iran are not friendly states and have conflicting interests. In this context, Armenian diplomacy should work to prevent any problematic issues from arising among our partners, ensuring that this step would not be perceived as anti-Russian or anti-Iranian, as it is currently being portrayed in the media," the expert explained. The expert also pointed out that Russia's initial reaction to this event was quite severe, citing Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov's statement emphasizing the need for South Caucasus countries to resolve their issues with their immediate neighbors independently. The expert believes that the Russian side will revisit this situation. "Signals from Armenia are clearly causing concern in Russia. In this situation, Russia can take certain measures, such as raising gas prices or other actions. It is difficult to say exactly what will happen after this, but it will depend on our diplomatic efforts and how adequate the explanations given to our partners who may be concerned about Armenia's actions are," Sargsyan concluded.
