ArmInfo. Armenian Foreign Minister Ararat Mirzoyan said whether we should expect the withdrawal of Russian border guards from the Armenian-Turkish border in the near future.
During a press conference on January 8 to summarize the year's results, Mirzoyan was asked about plans to reduce the presence of Russian border guards on Armenia's border with Turkey in the near future, given that they have already been "asked" to leave Zvartnots airport and the checkpoint on the Armenian-Iranian border and the next stage could involve the possibility of withdrawing the 102nd Russian base: "I would like to remind you that the Russian border troops were temporarily stationed on Armenia's borders to provide services until the Armenian side could establish its own institutions and capabilities to provide these services on its own." According to him, Armenia has now developed the necessary resources to manage security at Yerevan International Airport and the Armenian-Iranian border, and thanking the Russian side for many years of assistance, the Armenian border guards began to serve in these areas independently. "If there is an open border between Armenia and Turkey, if there is the same level of trust as with the Iranian side, then we can discuss and consider this issue as well," the minister noted. Mirzoyan also assured that the withdrawal of the 102nd RMB from Armenia is not currently on the agenda.
