ArmInfo. For the first time, fourth-grade students in Armenian schools have found themselves in the group of countries with an above-average level of knowledge in mathematics. This was stated by the Minister of Education, Science, Culture and Sports of Armenia Zhanna Andreasyan during a reporting press conference on January 8, referring to the TIMSS (Trends in Mathematics and Science Study) assessments - an international comparative study of the quality and trends in mathematics and science education. She noted that Armenia earned 513 points by the end of 2024.
At the same time, the minister drew attention to the fact that there is no such improvement in the context of natural sciences. However, the number of students who do not reach the minimum level of knowledge in this subject has decreased. According to her, today 82% of students have already overcome it, and 40% have reached the average level.
At the same time, Andreasyan pointed out the problems with the application of the acquired knowledge. This issue, in her opinion, can be solved by introducing laboratories. <By the end of 2024, we opened IT and biology laboratories in more than 540 schools. That is, almost half of the schools in Armenia are already equipped with laboratories, which is important in the context of improving the quality of education>, - said the head of the Ministry of Education and Science of the Republic of Armenia.
According to a study by the inspection body, the functional literacy indicators have improved among 4th grade students. The number of students receiving unsatisfactory grades decreased by 20%, 64.3% showed high results, answering 9 out of 14 questions correctly on average.
According to the Minister, the new educational standard, which was launched in pilot mode in Tavush region, should help improve all indicators. In this regard, Andreasyan noted that according to the results of the 2-year program for the implementation of the educational standard, an improvement in the students' results has been recorded.
<According to an independent assessment, the registered results of our students are 2 times higher than in other countries where the new standard has also been implemented. And in this sense, Armenia is considered a model country, whose educational experience is studied at various international venues>, - the head of the Ministry of Education, Science and Culture concluded.
