Armenian Human Rights Defender Anahit Manasyan, at a meeting with Alexander Vinnikov, the head of the NATO Liaison Office in Georgia, and Arkadiush Legich, the political officer of the Office, presented the main areas of her activities and spoke about the problems in the field of human rights protection in the country.
As reported by the press service of the Human Rights Defender of Armenia, the Ombudsman discussed the process of forced displacement from Nagorno-Karabakh in 2023 and the efforts made by herself and her staff during that time. Manasyan emphasized that, despite the ongoing improvement of international mechanisms for protecting human rights and the rule of law, the rights of persons forcibly removed from their homes and subjected to inhuman torture have not been fully restored. During the discussion, the chief human rights defender also mentioned her visits to the regions of Armenia and the work that has been carried out in the field of human rights. During the meeting, several issues related to the protection and promotion of human rights in the armed forces were discussed.
Manasyan also highlighted the current challenges in the country regarding ensuring equality and combating discrimination. In this context, she emphasized the unacceptable levels of incitement to hatred, discrimination and an atmosphere of intolerance in Armenia today, stressing the importance of the work being done to combat these issues. In turn, Alexander Vinnikov expressed gratitude for the reception and emphasized the role of the Ombudsman's institution in implementing the mission of the Human Rights Defender to protect human rights.
