ArmInfo.Georgian Prime Minister Irakli Kobakhidze has announced the suspension of talks on joining the European Union until the end of 2028. Until that time, the authorities also reject any budgetary grants from the Union.
The head of government explained that the discussion of these negotiations has become a tool for dividing society. At the same time, he emphasized that the state's goal is to join the EU in 2030. Brussels had previously announced the suspension of the country's integration process into the union in the summer, Kommersant reports.
The Prime Minister criticized many of Brussels' actions, including the adoption of resolutions against the Georgian government. Today, on November 28, the European Parliament adopted a resolution calling on the Georgian authorities to hold parliamentary elections again <under careful international control> in order to correct the violations committed. The MEPs accused the ruling party <Georgian Dream>, of backtracking on democracy.
<The opening of negotiations is being used as blackmail, a tool for division, similar to how the candidate status was used before. This is a completely artificial phenomenon, especially when it comes to negotiations, as the timing of which does not depend on the date of accession at all,> emphasized Irakli Kobakhidze. <By 2030, out of all the candidate countries, Georgia will be the most prepared for EU membership. This is our promise to the Georgian people, and it will be definitely,> promised the Prime Minister.
