ArmInfo.The Armenian Embassy will open in Hungary. The corresponding decision was made on November 28 at a meeting of the Armenian Government.
As stated in the rationale for the document, on December 1, 2022, a meeting of the Foreign Ministers of Armenia and Hungary, Ararat Mirzoyan and Peter Szijjarto, was held in Lodz, during which an agreement was reached on the full restoration of diplomatic relations.
After the restoration of diplomatic relations, an active political dialogue has been conducted between the two countries, and there is a multi-sectoral bilateral agenda.
It is also noted that Hungary is of great importance for Armenia as an EU member state. Armenian- Hungarian cooperation has great potential for development also within the framework of the Comprehensive and Enhanced Partnership Agreement between Armenia and the EU and the Eastern Partnership.
On May 6 of this year, during Mirzoyan's visit to Hungary, an agreement was reached on the mutual opening of embassies in the capitals.
In 2012, Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban returned Ramil Safarov to Azerbaijan as a national "hero" for hacking to death with an axe Armenian officer Gurgen Markaryan, who was undergoing military training in Hungary. After that, the then political leadership of Armenia froze diplomatic relations with that country.
Following the meeting between Ararat Mirzoyan and his Hungarian counterpart Peter Szijjarto, the parties reached an agreement on the restoration of full diplomatic relations, expressing their intention to open a new chapter in Armenian-Hungarian relations based on mutual trust and respect for international law. In May 2023, Armenia appointed a non-resident ambassador to Hungary. Ashot Smbatyan became the new ambassador.
