Alen Simonyan: COP29 is a historic opportunity for Azerbaijan to send  a positive message to the world

ArmInfo.The hosting of the UN Climate Change Conference COP29 in Baku is a historic opportunity for Azerbaijan to send a positive message to the world and showcase itself to the world in a positive light. Alen Simonyan, the Speaker of the Armenian Parliament, told journalists about this during a  briefing on October 22, noting that first and foremost, this concerns  the release of Armenian prisoners. "In this regard, the return of 23  Armenian prisoners and the signing of a peace treaty between Armenia  and Azerbaijan are of primary importance to me," he added.

In response to the question of whether Armenia plans to use the  opportunity to raise the issue on international platforms that COP29  is taking place in a country where citizens rights are being  violated, Simonyan noted that the world is aware of this. He also  mentioned that certain issues may be brought up at the Conference,  with statements and speeches being made. However, the head of the  National Assembly emphasized that Armenia does not intend to obstruct  the UN Conference in Baku in any way or exert any influence. , he said.

When asked if Armenia regrets supporting the hosting of the  international event in Baku, Simonyan noted that instead over 30  prisoners were able to return home. , the speaker explained, noting  that hosting a UN event in Baku is not more valuable than the  returning of Armenian prisoners to their homeland.

At the same time, Simonyan noted that participation in COP29 is not  currently on our agenda. According to him, this issue needs to be  discussed to understand the reasons for attending and the potential  benefits for Armenia. The Speaker of the Parliament emphasized that,  ultimately, the decision to invite Armenia to COP29 is not within  Azerbaijan's control. he concluded.
