Germany supports Armenia's aspiration to establish good-neighborly relations with its neighbors and will make every possible effort to establish final peace in the South Caucasus region, German President Frank-Walter Steinmeier stated in Berlin during a meeting with Armenian President Vahagn Khachaturyan.
As ArmInfo was informed by the press service of the Armenian President, at the beginning of the meeting, having pointed out the importance of Khachaturyan's participation in the Hamburg Conference on Sustainable Development, Steinmeier recalled that at their last meeting at the Special Olympics in Berlin, various realities and events in the South Caucasus were discussed.
"There are many problems and conflicts at the moment, and from this point of view, the Sustainable Development Forum has important content for the world to be more peaceful and developing.
I must note that Germany is interested in promoting both intercultural ties and economic relations with Armenia, and I know that this is a mutual interest. I also hope that in the near future my wish to visit Armenia will be fulfilled," the German President noted.
In turn, Khachaturyan expressed gratitude for the invitation to the Hamburg Conference on Sustainable Development and noted that new ideas and concepts aimed at peace were voiced during this significant event.
"We highly appreciate the close cooperation between Armenia and Germany in various areas, and the presence of your country in our reality is significant and tangible in various fields. We appreciate and attach importance to Germany's constant support and contribution to the implementation of democratic reforms in Armenia. I am confident that in the near future our cooperation will continue to expand in the fields of economy, energy, culture, education and other areas, for which there is a mutual desire and significant potential," the Armenian President said.
During the meeting, the German President inquired about the general situation and developments in the South Caucasus. In this context, Khachaturyan emphasized that Armenia is firmly moving towards achieving stable and lasting peace in the region, and has launched the "Crossroads of Peace" program for this purpose. Touching upon the Armenian-Turkish relations, the President of Armenia noted that official Yerevan, as before, advocates the normalization of relations without preconditions, and in this regard, certain steps have been taken to create and restore border infrastructures.
Khachaturyan emphasized that Armenia's position is to have regular and good-neighborly relations with all neighboring states, which meets the interests of all countries in the region. "It is clear to us that without peace, stability and good-neighborliness, it is impossible to achieve the expected development in our region and in the world as a whole," the President said.
During the conversation, the parties exchanged views on a number of issues on the agenda of cooperation between Armenia and Germany. A number of regional and global issues were touched upon, on which the presidents outlined their positions.
