ArmInfo. The Syunik Court of General Jurisdiction granted the Probation Service's motion to replace the ban on Goris Mayor Arush Arushanyan from holding positions in the local self-government bodies for 5 years with arrest.
Taking into account the time previously spent behind bars, Arushanyan will have to spend a year in prison.
The court's decision will enter into force after 1 month, unless the defense files an appeal.
Goris Mayor Arush Arushanyan, who was included in the electoral list of the Hayastan bloc headed by the 2nd President of the Republic of Armenia Robert Kocharyan, was accused of violating the secrecy of the vote, obstructing the exercise of the electoral right, abuse of office, complicity in illegal entrepreneurship and fraud. He has been under arrest since July 2021. However, while in custody, Arush Arushanyan took part in the local government elections held on October 17, 2021, and was re-elected as the head of the Goris community.
On August 21, the Anti-Corruption Court of Appeal, having satisfied the complaint of the prosecutor's office, upheld the decision of the first instance court of the Syunik region dated March 28, 2022, imposing a fine of 700 thousand drams with a probationary period of 1.5 years, and depriving him of the right to hold public office for 5 years. On the same day, the regional body of the Probation Service sent the court's verdict to Arushanyan to the Goris Council of Elders in order to ensure its implementation. However, at an extraordinary meeting, the Council recorded that the demands of the Probation Service go beyond the functions of the Council. On August 28, the Court rejected the complaint of the head of the Goris community Arush Arushanyan against the actions of the Probation Service of the Ministry of Justice of Armenia.
