ArmInfo. As of August 30, 2024, more than 4,300 forcibly displaced persons from Nagorno-Karabakh have applied to the Migration and Citizenship Service of the Ministry of Internal Affairs of Armenia to obtain RA citizenship, and just over 2,900 of them have received it.
The head of the department, Armen Ghazaryan, announced this on September 3 at a meeting of the Standing Committee on State and Legal Affairs on the new provisions proposed in the Electoral Code (EC).
As Ghazaryan pointed out, there is no special procedure for minors to obtain citizenship, and therefore they will apply for RA citizenship after their parents have been granted citizenship.
At the same time, as the head of the Service noted, a simplified procedure for granting citizenship is in effect for Artsakh residents - the process takes on average about 2 months, instead of the established 90 working days.
In addition, if in the general order applications for obtaining RA citizenship are accepted exclusively at the head office of the Service, then forced migrants from Artsakh are given the opportunity to apply for citizenship also at all territorial offices of the department. It should be noted that a mandatory condition for participation in the government program for providing forced migrants with housing is the presence of RA citizenship.
