ArmInfo. The most important motive for Iran's activity in the South Caucasus is to strengthen the presence of Turkey, a NATO member country, in the region.
Iranologist Vardan Voskanyan wrote about this on his Facebook page. As justification for his words, the expert cited recent statements by the new head of the IRI MFA Abbas Araghchi that the Caucasus region is of geopolitical and strategic importance for Iran. "Historical, cultural and geographical proximity has doubled the importance of expanding ties with the countries of this region," the head of the Iranian MFA said earlier.
"The statements of the Iranian Foreign Minister once again prove that the South Caucasus is a zone of primary interest and importance in the foreign policy agenda of official Tehran, where Iran will work with redoubled efforts," the Iranologist is sure, adding that this was largely facilitated by the active involvement of Turkey in the affairs of the region, which brought additional challenges not only to Armenia, but also to Iran. This is why Armenian-Iranian cooperation can be very effective in building up multilateral cooperation, which can and should take the form of a strategic alliance. "Armenian-Iranian historical and cultural ties are traditionally ancient, and the border of peace between Armenia and Iran is one of the oldest borders that have ever existed between the two countries," Voskanyan emphasized.
