ArmInfo. Signature collection for Armenia's EU membership, initiated by the Platform of Democratic Forces, will begin in September, the chairman of the Republic party Aram Sargsyan announced at a press conference on August 19. According to him, an initiative group has already been formed, consisting of 50 people. Artak Zaynalyan has already been appointed as the trustee of the initiative group. He will act on behalf of the group in the Central Electoral Commission, and later in the NA Committee on State and Legal Affairs.
"We have heard rumors that the government is absolutely not interested in collecting 50, 000 signatures, so they rejected them. We have made the initiative as strong as possible to prevent the Central Election Commission from rejecting it," he said. "If 50,000 RA citizens sign, then, according to the Constitution, the issue will be included in the agenda of the National Assembly. If it is not adopted, 300, 000 signatures will be required to submit the draft to a referendum. If not on the issue of joining the EU, then on what issue should a referendum be held? On what other issue should the people express their opinion?" the politician asks. "Then an answer will be given to the question of whether the people of Armenia demand changes in the political vector or not," he added.
