ArmInfo. Preserving the territorial integrity of the states of the South Caucasus is a "red" line for Tehran, Ambassador of the Islamic Republic of Iran to the Republic of Armenia Mehdi Sobhani told reporters on June 28 in Yerevan, answering a question about Azerbaijan's claims to the Syunik region of Armenia.
According to the diplomat, if the states of the region declare their desire for peace, they should not use threats against each other in their vocabulary. "I hope that the results of the presidential elections taking place today in Iran will contribute to the further strengthening of relations with Armenia. We respect the territorial integrity of your country and oppose any change in internationally recognized borders, as well as geopolitical changes, regardless of the change of governments in Iran and in Armenia," Sobhani said.
He added that the Republic of Armenia is a very important country for Iran, a good and honest neighbor, whose security systems are interconnected.
Answering the question about what Tehran will do in the event of Azerbaijan's aggression on the Syunik region of Armenia, the ambassador noted that the development of relations between the two countries, including in the field of security, depends on the Armenian side. "We have declared our readiness to cooperate on a mutual basis in all areas in the interests of the two countries. This cooperation is possible at any level, but it must occur on a mutual basis and on a mutual perception of the situation," Sobhani emphasized.
