Regarding the recognition of Palestine, the Armenian Foreign Ministry noted that the catastrophic humanitarian situation in the Gaza Strip and the ongoing military conflict are among the priority issues on the international political agenda that require a solution.
"The Republic of Armenia categorically rejects attacks on civilian infrastructure, violence against the civilian population, as well as the taking of hostages and captivity of civilians during armed conflict and joins the demands of the international community for their release without preconditions.
The Republic of Armenia has joined the UN General Assembly resolutions calling for an immediate ceasefire in the Gaza Strip. Moreover, the Republic of Armenia is sincerely interested in establishing peace and stability in the Middle East, establishing lasting reconciliation between the Jewish and Palestinian peoples. At various international platforms, we have always advocated for a peaceful and comprehensive settlement of the Palestinian issue and support the principle of a "two-state solution" in resolving the Israeli-Palestinian conflict. We are convinced that this is the only way to ensure that Palestinians and Israelis can realize their legitimate aspirations.
Based on the abovementioned and reaffirming its commitment to international law and the principles of equality, sovereignty and peaceful coexistence of peoples, the Republic of Armenia recognizes the State of "Palestine," the Armenian Foreign Ministry said in a statement.
On May 10, the UN General Assembly adopted a draft resolution recommending the Security Council to reconsider granting Palestine full membership in the world organization. At that time, 143 UN members voted for expanding Palestine's powers in the UN, 9 were against. Another 25 states abstained. Armenia voted in favor of this document.
After that, on May 22, Norway, Ireland and Spain announced their recognition of the Palestinian State. And on June 5, Slovenia officially recognized the State of Palestine. Earlier, Palestine was recognized by Sweden, Bulgaria, Cyprus, the Czech Republic, Hungary, Malta, Romania, Poland and Slovakia took this step before joining the EU.
