ArmInfo.Prominent French figures sent an open letter to French President Emmanuel Macron, calling on him to send French troops to Armenia. The letter was published by the French publication Le Point.
In the letter, a number of officials from across the political spectrum and representatives of civil society urge Macron to turn his attention to an emergency that worries many French republicans and human rights activists: namely the survival of Armenia.
"We are aware of your commitment to this issue, as well as the humanitarian, political and diplomatic efforts that France is making, in accordance with your mandate, to help this friendly country, which faces threats to its existence from forces positioning themselves as carriers of pan-Turkism, and whose spearhead is now in Baku.
But, unfortunately, it is to be feared that these efforts will not be enough to induce the Aliyev regime to abandon its expansionist and criminal projects. Possessing real military superiority, acquired in particular thanks to its gas and oil revenues and the support of the Turkish state, Azerbaijan is more tempted than ever by the possibility of military escalation. Moreover, the ethnic cleansing of the Armenian population of Nagorno-Karabakh passed without consequences for Baku, and Armenia's openness to democracy isolated it, putting it at odds with its strategic ally," the letter says.
The authors of the letter emphasize that a dangerous situation is emerging for Armenia, bordering on the risk of complete destruction, one hundred years after the 1915 genocide.
At the same time, the letter notes that the likelihood of such a scenario being realized would not only be an absolute disaster for the brothers in Armenia, but a terrible failure for humanity and, consequently, for France, Europe and all powers striving to respect international law and defeat force with justice.
"Mr. President, if the situation seems serious enough for you to be wary, there is always hope until the worst happens. Therefore, we believe that on this front there is still time to prevent danger by setting an example of an even stronger mobilization together with Armenia. That is why in these lines we call for the sending of French armed forces to this brotherly country, the effective presence of which will be aimed at deterring those who are thinking of attacking Armenia. It seems to us that by raising the French tricolor in this endangered country. "By reaffirming their exclusively peaceful vocation, they will revive the breath of hope, solidarity and freedom and thereby strengthen our own immune system against the evil winds of totalitarianism and obscurantism," the French leaders said in an open letter to Macron.
The letter was signed by dozens of famous figures from various fields. Among them are the mayor of Paris Anne Hidalgo, the philosopher Elisabeth Badinter, the former Minister of Europe and Foreign Affairs Bernard Kouchner, the President of the Ile-de-France region Valerie Pecresse, members of the European Parliament Francois-Xavier Bellamy, Nathalie Loiseau, Jean-Marc Germain, the mayor of Montpellier Michael Delafosse and others.
