Armenian Human Rights Defender Anahit Manasyan, at a meeting with the Director for European and Eurasian Affairs of the Bureau of Democracy, Human Rights and Labor of the US State Department, Christopher Anderson, presented the scope of powers of the Human Rights Defender as a constitutional body.
According to the Human Rights Office, she also spoke about the priorities of her office, areas of activity, as well as current problems in the field of human rights protection in the country, and focused on discrimination and intolerance.
Particular attention was paid to protecting the rights of those forcibly displaced from Nagorno-Karabakh. She spoke about the fact-finding carried out by her and her staff. In this context, Anahit Manasyan noted that from the very first day she was actively involved in these works, visiting Goris, Kornidzor and Vayk with her employees, also performing work at night.
The documented information was summarized in the extraordinary report of the Human Rights Defender, which was presented by the Ombudsman to international organizations and entities mandated to protect human rights, with an advisory section confirming its authenticity.
During the meeting, Manasyan also presented details of the research work carried out in the disaster zone of Lori region, noted that, together with representatives of the headquarters, she visited settlements affected by the flood, and held private conversations with a population of more than 50 people, including evacuated families.
Among other things, issues were discussed in the context of investigating cases related to the right to freedom of assembly, torture and other forms of ill-treatment.
