ArmInfo. In the context of the climate change conference taking place in Bonn, German civil society activists and human rights defenders demanded that Azerbaijan and President Ilham Aliyev release Armenian prisoners. As part of this Bonn conference, experts will determine the agenda for the COP29 meetings, which will be held in Baku in November.
As reported in a message received by ArmInfo from the Free Armenian Prisoners team, the President of the German-Armenian Central Council Jonathan Spanbenbeg called on conference participants, the international community and human rights organizations to pay attention to the fact that COP29 will be held in a country where human rights.
"It is sad that such an important conference as the UN is being held in a country where human rights are violated in every possible way. A country that is pursuing a policy of genocide against Armenians and Armenia, which recently carried out ethnic cleansing of 120 thousand Armenians in Nagorno-Karabakh, which at this very moment destroys Armenian historical monuments. The country that holds Armenian prisoners and hostages in Baku prisons, including the former leaders of Nagorno-Karabakh," the human rights activist noted.
Spanbenbeg noted that the so-called subsidiary bodies of the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change meet in Bonn. This conference, which is being held in the run-up to COP29, will run until 30 June. More than six thousand delegates from all over the world will be here to prepare the agenda for COP29, which will be held in Baku.
"On this occasion, we, as representatives of the German-Armenian Central Council, sent the first letter to all members of the German Bundestag. Other events will be held in Bonn during the week.
What can you do? Firstly, you can publish information on this issue on your pages on social networks, publish photos with the hashtag COP29, personally contact the deputy from your constituency, asking him a simple question: "What are you doing to ensure that Baku immediately releases those detained in Baku prisons of Armenian prisoners and hostages who became victims of genocide?"
You can contact delegates, NGOs and climate activists from your countries who will be attending the conference in Baku, or who are present today or will be attending the conference in Bonn in the coming weeks. You yourself can organize large and small protests in your countries, call on your friends to stand up. This is not a problem that concerns only Armenians, it is a problem that can concern any person," Spanbenbeg added. In conclusion, he informed that the next action in Bonn will take place on June 7 at the World Conference Center.
