ArmInfo. In the coming years, Armenia will face a demographic problem caused by the aging of society. This was stated by the RA Minister of Labor and Social Affairs Narek Mkrtchyan during the discussions of the 2023 budget execution report on June 3.
According to him, over the years, the number of pensioners will become more significant in the country's population. For this reason, it is necessary to create all the conditions to ensure that people of retirement age participate in the labor market.
The Minister added that work on developing a demographic strategy had been underway for two years, but its application had been delayed twice due to the influx of people from Nagorno-Karabakh due to the Russian-Ukrainian conflict. In this situation, a pause was needed to assess the situation as a whole and the prospects for its development for the application of various models. The strategy was developed based on comprehensive discussions and recommendations from the Vienna Institute of Demography and two of the world's five leading experts. The minister noted that there are several ways to solve the existing problem: one is to increase the birth rate, the second is the inevitability of demographics, and the third is to provide people with decent job. Despite the fact that the strategy has not yet been adopted, laws have been adopted aimed at its implementation. For example, pensioners have been given the right to conclude an employment contract with employers.
