ArmInfo. At its plenary session on May 21, the National Assembly of Armenia discussed the candidacy of a member of the Constitutional Court. According to Part 1. Article 166 of the RA Constitution, the general meeting of judges nominated David Khachaturyan for this position.
Earlier on January 4, the powers of Constitutional Court Judge Arayik Tunyan were terminated. On March 29, the general meeting of judges again nominated Judge of the Criminal Chamber of the Court of Cassation David Khachaturyan as a candidate for the position of judge of the Constitutional Court.
Presenting the biography of the candidate, the head of the RA Court of Cassation, Lilit Tadevosyan, in her speech did not indicate the fact that David Khachaturyan had previously worked at the Open Society Foundations - Armenia, which was noted by MP from the opposition "Armenia" faction Agnessa Hamoyan. She recalled that the majority in the General Meeting of Judges had previously voted not for Khachaturyan, but for David Balayan, the son of former member of the Constitutional Court Kim Balayan. However, already in parliament, the ruling Civil Contract faction did not participate in the elections of Balayan and actually failed them. Now the candidacy of Khachaturyan, who has less support in the General Council of Judges, has been submitted to parliament. Hamoyan considered this decision disrespect for the judiciary. "In fact, the ruling faction of the National Assembly failed in the election of a candidate from the general meeting of judges and did not participate in the voting, because it wanted to bring Khachaturyan to the Constitutional Court, and this is obvious," said Hamoyan.
