ArmInfo. The current movement "In the Name of the Motherland" is a direct continuation of similar processes that took place in the recent past, Chairman of the National Assembly of the Republic of Armenia Alen Simonyan told reporters on May 21.
According to him, there is nothing extraordinary in the new movement, just the leader of the previous movement, ex-Prime Minister Vazgen Manukyan, was replaced by the head of the Tavush diocese of the Armenian Apostolic Church, Archbishop Bagrat Galstanyan. They all have the same agenda and the same goals. In practice, the speaker continued, the political opposition, represented by the same individuals and the same slogans, presented a political bid for a change in power, and therefore the authorities do not have any new emotions. "In no country in the world can the government have 100th support from citizens, and Armenia is no exception. I don't see anything extraordinary in the current movement. Obviously, we must have an opposition that must have its own agenda. Impossible imagine that within the walls of parliament the ruling party was represented 100%. The same thing happens in society, which in itself is a sign of a normal democratic state," Simonyan emphasized.
Protests in Armenia began after it became known on April 19 that Yerevan and Baku agreed to begin delimitation from Tavush. Having led the procession from Tavush to Yerevan, on May 9, the head of the Tavush diocese of the Armenian Apostolic Church, Archbishop Bagrat Galstanyan called on the Prime Minister to resign. The demand for resignation remained unanswered, after which Galstanyan announced the beginning of acts of disobedience.
