ArmInfo. The official representative of the Russian Foreign Ministry Maria Zakharova refused to assess the protests in Armenia and Georgia.
Thus, on May 15, during a briefing, when asked to comment on the protests taking place in Armenia and Georgia and the reaction of the EU and the United States to them, Zakharova recalled that Moscow has always taken the position of not assessing internal political processes in a particular country.
"We have always said that internal political life in a particular country is still an internal matter of a sovereign state," Zakharova said.
At the same time, she stated that the Western reaction to these protests is surprising in its stability.
"This is another example of double standards. Representatives of the US and EU every day attack the Georgian authorities for allegedly cruel treatment of demonstrators, and they do it in different ways," Zakharova noted, adding that this is being done in every way - an attempt to intimidate and intimidate Georgian authorities.
"What do we see in the context of Armenia? The deafening silence of the West against the backdrop of mass arrests of demonstrators in Armenia. Brute force is also used there. It's as if the West was turned off from this agenda. They turned on only one note, and everything else seems to not be happening ", noted the Russian diplomat.
According to her, Moscow sees that the Western media, as if on command, are doing their best to promote demonstrations in Georgia, presenting their participants as heroes, whitewashing even their illegal actions.
"As for the protests of many thousands in Armenia? The Western mainstream seems to be glossing over them, pretending that nothing is happening there, or presenting these events as not reflecting the will of the Armenian people and allegedly orchestrated from outside," Zakharova noted.
She called this presentation amazing, which does not meet any standards. In this vein, the diplomat once again recalled the condemning statements of representatives of the State Department and the EU regarding the protests in Georgia, and the silence regarding the events in Armenia.
Protests in Armenia have been taking place since April 19 of this year. Citizens oppose unilateral concessions by the Armenian authorities in the process of normalizing relations with Azerbaijan. The Armenian authorities are using brute, disproportionate force against peaceful protesters. There are casualties among both civilians and journalists. Western countries do not comment in any way on the actions of Armenian law enforcement officers against demonstrators.
