ArmInfo. One of the participants in the peaceful protests taking place these days in Yerevan against the backdrop of unilateral concessions by the Armenian authorities suffered a broken leg due to the disproportionate actions of the "Red Berets." This is stated in a statement by the Five Human Rights Defenders initiative.
According to the statement, the incident occurred today, May 14, on Sakharov Square. "Today, May 14, during one of the peaceful protests initiated by the "Tavush for the Motherland" movement, during an attempt to organize an unjustified encirclement near Sakharov Square in Yerevan, as a result of the use of disproportionate force by the "red berets", RA citizen Karen Gevorgyan's leg was broken.
Human rights activists Arsen Babayan and Carlos Avagyan visited Gevorgyan at the Mashtots police station. On our initiative, a crime report was filed.
We are confident that this shameful incident was possible because in none of the previous cases was a single Red Beret brought to justice, and open patronage was carried out for political reasons. Therefore, we have the right not to trust the ability of law enforcement officials to properly investigate the fact of Karen Gevorgyan's bodily harm . However, we demand a proper investigation while fully protecting the principle of transparency," the statement further said.
As ArmInfo previously reported today, these days representatives of Armenian law enforcement agencies are using disproportionate, unprovoked aggression against both participants in peaceful protests and the media representatives.
This morning, a police car hit Mediahub.am journalist Nare Gevorgyan at a pedestrian crossing, on a green light. Yesterday, two media representatives were injured due to the actions of the police. Citizens are detained without explanation; in many cases, they are taken off the sidewalks using brute force. Representatives of Western diplomatic missions, who before the so-called Velvet Revolution issued several condemning statements a day in similar situations, today remain deeply silent. They turn a blind eye to both the violation of the right to freedom of assembly and peaceful protests, and the violation of media rights.
