ArmInfo.Russian President Vladimir Putin and Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan will be able to personally discuss various issues in the short term, including the departure of Russian border guards, stated Press Secretary of the Russian President Dmitry Peskov in response to a question about the words of the Prime Minister of Armenia Nikol Pashinyan that Yerevan will demand the withdrawal of border guards from the Tavush region.
"Again, there were no signals in this regard. We expect that in the short term, President Putin and Prime Minister Pashinyan will have the opportunity to discuss these and, if necessary, other pressing issues in person," Peskov said, RIA Novosti reports.
Russian border guard posts were placed on the border with Azerbaijan in the Tavush region in 2021 as part of Armenian-Russian bilateral cooperation. On Friday, the Armenian Foreign Ministry reported that during the meeting of the commissions of the two countries on border delimitation issues that took place on April 19 on the Armenian-Azerbaijani border, the passage of individual sections of the border line directly between the settlements of Baganis (Armenia) - Baganis Ayrim (Azerbaijan), Voskepar was previously agreed upon. (Armenia) - Ashagi Askipara (Azerbaijan), Kirants (Armenia) - Kheyrimli (Azerbaijan) and Berkaber (Armenia) - Kyzyl Gadzhily (Azerbaijan) "with the aim of bringing them into line with the legally justified inter-republican border that existed within the Soviet Union at the time its collapse."
Previously, Pashinyan stated that the Armenian authorities are planning to build new sections of the road on the border with Azerbaijan instead of those that extend beyond the borders of the former Armenian SSR. In particular, he noted that in the Tavush region in the northeastern part of the country there is a section of road near the village of Voskepar, which did not pass through the territory of the Armenian SSR. According to the prime minister, previously the Armenian side, in order to maintain control over the entire length of the road, considered the possibility of a proportionate exchange of sections of territory with the Azerbaijani side. But later he decided that there was no need to do this, since it would create additional uncertainty.
