ArmInfo. Armenia will appoint a defence attache at its embassy in the United Kingdom. The decision was made on April 12 at a government meeting.
As stated in the rationale for the project, the legal basis for defense cooperation between Armenia and Great Britain is the memoranda signed on September 24, 2004 "On relations and cooperation in the field of defense between the Ministry of Defense of the Republic of Armenia and the Ministry of Defense of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland", as well as 24 June 2009 <Memorandum of Understanding between the Ministry of Defense of the Republic of Armenia and the Ministry of Defense of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland on cooperation in the field of cartography, geometric surveying and exchange of geographical materials."
The great potential for cooperation between the two countries in the military and military-technical field, as well as the great interest of the UK in deepening cooperation in recent times, are due to the need to have a defence attache of the Republic of Armenia in the United Kingdom. This will give a new quality to partnerships in the military field and will contribute to the further deepening of friendly ties, as well as expanding the possibilities of military and military-technical cooperation, the document notes.
An accredited defence attache in the UK must carry out representative work, including establishing and deepening official relations with the military departments of the two countries, developing relations in the military field, monitoring the implementation of cooperation programs, and providing assistance in organizing visits of delegations of the Ministry and the Armed Forces. The defence attache, having established official relations with the command of the armed forces of the host country, will ensure official representation of the Armenian side at military parades, military exercises, military movements, exhibitions of weapons and military equipment, and will also visit military educational institutions, enterprises of the military-industrial complex, etc. at the invitation of the local military department. On behalf of the Ministry of Defense of the Republic of Armenia and through the mediation of the leadership of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the defence attache may perform supervisory functions in the manner established by international law. It is expected that the defence attache will begin his duties as an employee of the diplomatic mission on January 1, 2025.
