ArmInfo. The increase in serious and especially serious crimes in Armenia in 2023 is due to changes in the Criminal Law. Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan made a similar assessment on April 12 at a meeting of the Cabinet of Ministers.
"90% increase is due to changes in legislation. Currently, criminal proceedings are initiated in all cases of sudden death. Practice shows that this is justified, because there are cases when it is very similar to sudden death, but later in the criminal case it turns out that this was murder. But in most cases, of course, this version is refuted," Pashinyan said.
The Prime Minister admitted that the number of particularly serious crimes has increased by 27%, but part of the increase is also due to these legislative changes.
"In general, it must be stated that the fight against crime is a serious task. We are also very sensitive to crime related to tourists, because it can give a bad image. From time to time we discuss with the Minister of Internal Affairs, the National Security Service, and representatives of the judiciary on how to make the fight against crime more effective," Pashinyan said.
